A homeowner has many responsibilities, including remembering to clean out the gutters on their house. While it can seem like a tedious task, it’s an extremely important and necessary step to protect your home from water damage. To properly clean your gutters and save yourself from contacting a siding company for water damage repair, follow these steps:
● Know the best time to clean the gutters. You should clean your gutters twice a year—once during the spring and once during the fall. Spring and fall are optimal seasons for gutter cleaning because of the high amount of falling leaves and branches. It’s critical to pay attention to when storms are about to hit, as you don’t want to clean gutters when the contents are wet and sticky from rain.
● Use caution. It’s important to remain cautious and careful while cleaning your gutters. Use a ladder to reach the gutter system, and make sure you maintain your balance. Although it may be irritating having to climb down and move the ladder every few minutes, it’s a much safer option than trying to reach further down the gutter and throwing off your balance.
● Use proper utensils. When you’re up the ladder and ready to start getting the debris out of the gutters, it doesn’t hurt to have on a pair of gardening gloves. These gloves will keep your hands clean as you reach in and grab the leaves and other debris out of the gutters. If you find it’s easier to use a garden trowel or other small tool to get the debris out, go ahead and use it. When you’ve cleaned the section in front of you, step down the ladder to move it along the house. Continue the same process until your gutters look clear.
● Spray water down the system. Use a hose to spray water down the gutter to knock down any loose debris. Keep an eye on the spout to make sure the water is moving with ease. If water exits the spout with no problems, you can rest assured you did a good job cleaning your gutters.
