Benefits of Energy-Efficient Windows & Doors

Doors and windows provide us with natural light, natural air circulation, and access to the outside. The benefits of high-performance doors and windows allow for energy and cost savings, improved comfort, less condensation, increased natural light, great views, reduced fading, and lower heating and cooling costs . . . just to name a few!

Design Considerations

Windows and doors are one of the most complex, yet most interesting elements in residential design. New products and technologies have changed the performance of both doors and windows in radical ways. Issues such as climate, orientation, and shading all affect the energy performance, while human factor issues such as access to fresh air, daylight, and natural views impact the comfort of a home.

Because we work not only as a general contractor, but also as a design firm, we are confident that we can work with you to find the perfect fit for your taste and your budget.

Understanding Performance

Heat flows through windows and doors in three ways: conduction, convection and radiation. When these basic mechanisms of heat transfer are applied to the performance, they interact in complex ways. Three energy performance characteristics of windows and doors are used to portray how energy is transferred and are the basis for how energy performance is quantified.

1.)  Insulating Value:

When there is a temperature difference between inside and outside, heat is lost or gained through the window or door frames.  Due to the combined effects of conduction, convection, and radiation glazing on the glass panels of your doors and windows then takes place. The U-Factor of a door or window measures the rate of heat transfer and tells you how well the window or door insulates. U-Factor values usually range between 0.25 to 1.25; the lower the U-Factor, the better the door or window insulates.

2.)  Heat Gain from Solar Radiation:

Regardless of the outside temperature, heat can be gained through windows by direct or indirect solar radiation. The ability to control this heat gain is measured in terms of the Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) of the window or door.

3.)  Infiltration:

Heat loss and gain also occur by air leakage through cracks in the window or door assembly. This effect is measured in terms of the amount of air (cubic feet or cubic meters per minute) that passes through a unit area of window or door (square foot or square meter) under given pressure conditions. In reality, infiltration varies slightly with wind-driven and temperature-driven pressure changes.
